Many patients choose Invisalign because it’s a more comfortable, discreet alternative to traditional braces. Although this treatment is often preferred, it doesn’t allow your dentist the same manipulation of movement as standard orthodontics so it’s not always recommended for more severe misalignments.
Fortunately, Invisalign developed attachments to provide a stronger anchor for your trays to shift stubborn or overcrowded teeth. They’re bonded to your enamel directly, so many patients worry it will hurt when it’s time to take them off. Continue reading to learn why there’s no reason to fear having the small bumps removed!
What Are Invisalign Attachments Made From?
If you have wider gaps or stubborn or torqued teeth, your provider might need to include attachments with your Invisalign treatment. These are small bumps made from the same composite resin your dentist uses to fill cavities or mend chips and cracks in your enamel. They’re placed directly onto your teeth and then hardened in place with a special ultraviolet curing light.
Instead of being color-matched to your natural shade, they utilize a translucent hue that’s see-through and blends seamlessly with your smile.
How Long Will I Have Invisalign Attachments?
These small lumps are bonded directly to your enamel and typically remain in place for the duration of your treatment. That means they might be there for the entire 12 to 18 months that you wear Invisalign.
There are circumstances in which they can be removed sooner, like if they’re included on a single arch of teeth that finishes moving sooner than the other. In most cases, however, it’s safe to assume the inclusions will be there throughout.
Does It Hurt to Remove Invisalign Attachments?
Typically, patients feel more sore when their attachments are placed or when they switch to new trays than when the bumps are removed. This is because they’re intended to provide additional grips for the plastic to shift your teeth more effectively, which increases the pressure exerted over them.
Removing them is usually a straightforward process that may only take about 15 to 30 minutes to complete. It’s considered painless so you likely won’t even require a local anesthetic, but if you’re overly anxious, you can discuss sedative options with your provider. Once you’re comfortable, they’ll use a special instrument to gently thin the mounds until they’re flush with your enamel, then polish your teeth until they shine.
You might feel slightly sensitive afterward, but most people can resume their usual daily activities immediately after their appointment.
As you can see, there’s nothing to fear when it comes to removing Invisalign attachments!
