Cosmetic dentistry can make an incredible impact on how you look to others and how you feel about yourself. There are a variety of treatments at your disposal, each of which specially suited to a particular issue you may have with your smile.

However, even if you’re interested in improving your smile, you may wonder whether cosmetic dentistry is possible for you. Here’s how to know if you’re a good candidate or not.

Who is a Good Candidate for Cosmetic Dentistry?

Generally speaking, cosmetic dentistry is incredibly low impact. Most of the procedures are incredibly safe and have a high success rate, which means that most people who are interested in bettering their smile can do so without much risk.

For the most part, if you have an issue with your teeth that you’d like to have addressed, you are probably a good candidate for some kind of cosmetic dentistry.

Who is NOT a Good Candidate?

There are, however, a few exceptions:

Young People

While not always the case, there are some cosmetic dental treatments that can be problematic for children and teenagers. For example, teeth whitening can cause issues in younger people, as their enamel hasn’t developed sufficiently yet. For this reason, most cosmetic dentists would recommend that you wait until your teeth have fully formed before pursuing some kinds of cosmetic dentistry.

However, this is not the case for every cosmetic treatment. Dental bonding, for example, is perfectly fine for people of any age. For that reason, it’s usually a good idea to talk to your dentist about what kinds of options are available to a teenager interested in cosmetics.

People With Oral Health Problems

Often, gum disease and tooth decay can cause complications for your cosmetic treatment. Veneers, for example, can be compromised if you have cavities on the tooth that the cosmetic are applied to, or if your gums are inflamed. Teeth whitening also becomes a little bit dangerous if the enamel has been thinned by tooth decay.

Before receiving any kind of cosmetic dentistry, your dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth to make sure that you’re healthy, and will treat any oral health problems you have before beginning aesthetic treatment.
