5 Non-Dental Issues Your Dentist May Find During Your Appointment

It is time for your next dentist visit, and already you are thinking of excuses for why you could cancel. After all, it’s just a routine cleaning, right? While bi-yearly check-ups and cleanings do wonders for your teeth and gums, they also provide an opportunity for your dentist to find serious medical problems. In face, these appointments play an instrumental role in detecting early signs of these five non-dental issues.

Oral Cancer

According to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, around 53,260 adults will be diagnosed with oral cancer in the United States this year alone. This is a staggering number of people; however, it is important to note that the survival rate is 84% when it is diagnosed at an early stage. While you may be able to detect some of the symptoms associated with oral cancer, your dentist is going to play a significant role in catching risk factors, like red and white lesions on your mouth. They often appear on the tongue and floor of your mouth and are especially important to look for in patients who smoke, use alcohol heavily, or have been exposed to HPV. If symptoms are present, your dentist will request an oral cancer screening.

Diabetes

One symptom that is directly associated with diabetes is a wound that is not healing properly. While this sign can be present in the legs, arms, and stomach, it also can be present in infections and sores in the mouth. If you have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic, then it is important to notify your dentist so that they can look for abnormal bleeding, loose teeth, and receding gums. If any of these symptoms are existent, your dentist may recommend that you visit your primary care physician to receive a blood glucose test.

HIV

Human Immunodeficiency Virus, commonly referred to as HIV, impedes a person’s body from effectively fighting off infection. This leaves the individual vulnerable to bacteria and germs that cause serious health concerns. Although signs may not be present right away, symptoms like oral warts, colored spots, or necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis will warn your dentist that a blood test from your primary care physician may be the next best step.

Eating Disorders

When poor nutrition is at hand, it can wreak havoc on everything from the immune system to mental health. While many of the symptoms can be kept hidden by someone suffering from an eating disorder, bleeding gums, erosion on the teeth, and dry mouth can all alert your dentist of what is really going on. If these symptoms are found at your next visit, your dentist will discuss the treatment options with you privately.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes the density and quality of the bones in your body to weaken. While post-menopausal women tend to be at a higher risk of experiencing this condition, it can happen to people of any age or gender. If your dentist notices loose teeth or a receding gum line, they will recommend undergoing a bone density test.

Having an experienced dentist is important for your overall health, not just your teeth and gums. If you do not have one, type “dentist near me” into Google, schedule a visit, and attend your appointment to ensure that everything looks healthy and normal.
