When it comes to taking care of your teeth, there are a lot of questions to ask yourself. What toothbrush should I use? Firm or soft bristles? Electric or manual? Fortunately, your dentist is here to help you make that decision. Continue reading below to learn how to select the right kind of toothbrush for your needs.
Soft, Medium, or Firm Bristles?
For the vast majority of people, your dentist will recommend using the softest bristled brush you can find, especially if you brush your teeth with vigor. If you use a brush with medium or hard bristles, you could actually irritate your gum tissue and wear down the enamel of your teeth. Over time, this can leave you more susceptible to tooth decay and painful sensitivity. Additionally, make sure the tips of the bristles you select are round, as they do a better job of cleaning.
Manual or Electric?
There are many things to consider when picking between a powered and a disposable toothbrush, such as:
- Cost. Electric toothbrushes cost several times more than manual ones, and you’ll have to change the brush head every three months, as often as you should switch out your manual brush. However, some studies have shown that electric toothbrushes remove plaque more effectively, so you may end up saving money on dental bills in the long run.
- Likeability. Ultimately, the best toothbrush for you is one that you’re going to enjoy using and will motivate you to brush at least twice a day. Many people enjoy using powered toothbrushes more because it takes some of the work off you. Also, children might like electric toothbrushes better since they can come equipped with their favorite cartoon characters or play fun music.
- Dexterity. Some people with mobility issues like arthritis may find it easier to use electric toothbrushes, since they do the moving for you. In addition, it may be simpler for children to use electric toothbrushes, since their little arms might not be great at scrubbing their teeth yet.
Overall, your dentist would recommend getting an electric toothbrush with the softest bristles you can find. But as long as you’re brushing every day, it doesn’t really matter all that much what kind you’re using.
